Hero of You vs Magic Story
Magic Story is the closest competitor we have on method: you upload one photo and the child is illustrated on every page. The honest difference is the SHAPE of the book, not the technology. Magic Story makes a 21-page picture book, printed in the USA, from $19.99 softcover and $24.99 hardcover. Hero of You writes a 12-chapter story - a longer read that grows with the child rather than a picture book. They are cheaper on a hardcover and they let you preview the whole book; we give you more story and a family cast drawn from real photographs. Which is better depends on which of those you actually want.
How Hero of You personalizes
You upload one photo of your child. Our engine turns them into an illustrated storybook character - same face shape, hair and skin tone - and keeps them recognizable across all 12 chapters. You preview the cover and first chapter free before paying.
How Magic Story personalizes
Magic Story: upload one photo and "your child's real face and outfit are illustrated on every page of their own hardcover story", in a "Pixar-quality" style, for ages 2-10. Books are 21 premium hardcover pages, printed and shipped from the US. An extra character (for example mum) is +$4.99. They also sell a subscription, Magic Story+, from $29.99/month. Photos are "encrypted, used only to create your book, then automatically deleted". (As listed August 2026.)

When Magic Story might be the better pick
- You want the cheaper hardcover - theirs is $24.99 against our $42.90, and that is a real difference, not a rounding.
- You want to see the whole book before paying - they preview every page; we preview the cover and chapter one.
- You want a short picture book rather than a 12-chapter read - at 21 pages theirs suits a younger child or a shorter attention span.
Common questions
Is Hero of You a good Magic Story alternative?
If you want a longer written story - twelve chapters rather than a 21-page picture book - or more than one person in it drawn from their own photo, yes. If you want the cheapest hardcover with the whole book previewed first, Magic Story is the better pick and we would rather say so.
Which is cheaper?
Magic Story, on print: $24.99 hardcover against our $42.90. Our digital edition is cheaper at $14.90 against their $19.99 softcover. Neither of us has a subscription requirement for a single book.
What is the real difference?
Length and cast. Ours is a 12-chapter written story and supports a family cast of up to four people, each illustrated from their own photograph. Theirs is a 21-page picture book with additional characters at $4.99 each.
Do both delete the photo?
Yes. Magic Story states photos are encrypted, used only to create the book, then automatically deleted. We delete each photograph once that person's portrait has been drawn - our photo-privacy page sets out exactly when.
