Buying as a grandparent
A grandparent’s guide to giving a book they will keep
How to make a personalized storybook for a grandchild, what you need before you start, and how to get it there in time.
You need one photograph and about ten minutes. You do not need an account to look, you do not need to be good with computers, and you see the whole book before you pay for anything. If you get stuck, one email reaches a person, not a queue.
What you need before you start
One clear photograph of your grandchild’s face, looking at the camera, in daylight if you can. A phone photo is fine - it does not need to be a portrait. If someone else took it, ask them to send you the original rather than a screenshot, because a screenshot of a screen loses the detail the illustrator works from.
Their first name, their age, and one or two things they are into at the moment. That is genuinely all - the story is written around those.
You see it before you pay, and again before it prints
The cover and the whole first chapter are free to look at, with no card and no account. If the child in the picture does not look like your grandchild, you simply close the tab.
After you buy, we build the whole book and send it back to you to read. Nothing goes to the printer until you say yes - and if a chapter or a picture is not right, tell us and we will do it again. This is the part most gift shopping does not give you.
Getting it there in time
A printed book takes six days to a UK address and nine to ten inside the United States, counted from the day you approve it rather than the day you pay - so leave a fortnight and you will be comfortable.
If the birthday is on Saturday, buy the digital edition instead. It is the same story and the same pictures, ready to read the same evening, and you can order the printed keepsake afterwards without starting again.
Sending it straight to them
You can have it delivered to the child’s address rather than yours, and the dedication page carries your message - printed inside the book, so it does not get thrown out with the wrapping paper. "For Maya, from Grandma, on your fifth birthday" is the sort of line that gets read back to you in fifteen years.

Common questions
Is this difficult to do if I am not confident with computers?
No. It is three short steps: upload one photo, type their name and age, pick a story. Everything else is done for you, and you can stop and come back. If you would rather someone walked you through it, email us and we will.
What if I only have a photo of the two of us together?
Use it - but crop it to just the child if you can, because the illustrator works from one face. Each book stars one child on purpose, which is what keeps the likeness true on every page.
Can it be sent straight to my grandchild?
Yes. Enter their address at checkout, and put your message on the dedication page so they know who it came from.
What if it does not look like them?
You will know before you pay, because the cover and first chapter are free to view. And after you buy, tell us before you approve it and we will regenerate it until it is right.
What age is this suitable for?
Roughly three to eight. The reading level is set to the age you enter, so the same story is simpler for a four-year-old than for a seven-year-old.
