Photo book vs storybook

These are two different products that share a shelf. A photo book is a printed album: your actual photographs, laid out on pages, usually with captions and a cover. A personalized storybook is fiction: an original narrative in which your child appears as an illustrated character who does things they have never actually done.

The difference in what they preserve is the point. A photo book records what happened - the holiday, the first year, the wedding - and its value grows as the memory fades. A storybook records who a child was to the people who love them, by casting them as brave or kind or curious and then proving it over twelve chapters.

They also age differently. Photo books date precisely and pleasantly; you can see the haircut and the sofa. Storybooks do not date at all, because the child in them is illustrated rather than photographed, which is why a storybook still reads as a book when the child is twenty and the photo album reads as an artefact.

Cost and effort differ too. A photo book asks you to select, arrange and caption, which takes an evening or several. A storybook asks for one photograph and a few details and then produces the rest, so the labour is minutes rather than hours - though what you get back is somebody else's writing rather than your own.

For gifting, the useful test is who the giver is. A photo book is a natural gift from somebody who was there and took the pictures, which usually means a parent. A storybook works from somebody who was not there - a grandparent abroad, an aunt, a family friend - because it needs one photo rather than an archive.

Some products blur the line by printing real photographs into a light narrative frame. These are worth judging as photo books with decoration rather than as stories, because the arc is usually thin and the photographs are doing the emotional work.

A photo book if you have the pictures and were there for the moments; a storybook if you were not. The storybook needs one photograph and a few details, which makes it the practical choice for a relative who lives far away.

Can a personalized storybook use my real photos in the pages?

Most do not print the photograph itself. They use it to build an illustrated character who resembles the child and then draw that character into every scene, which is what lets the child appear in places no photograph exists of.
