The Bravest Lunchbox is built on a small true thing: on a day when everything is new, one familiar object does a lot of work. The lunchbox comes from home, gets opened at noon, and gets carried back. It is the gentlest of the school-start books and the best one for an anxious child.

Two to eight, best at four and five. The idea that an object can hold a bit of home in it is available very young and stays useful. Older children may want the classroom drama the book deliberately leaves out. Reading level chosen at setup; keep it short if it is being read on the morning itself.
