A peek inside

How the adventure unfolds

These are just sample lines. Your book is written fresh for your child - their name woven through every page, with the words, sentence length and tone tuned to their age, and shaped by the story, interests and details you choose.

Chapter One

Nineteen Wrong Names

Your child tried nineteen names on the new goldfish and every single one of them was wrong.

A list of nineteen crossed-out names on a piece of paper, several barely legible.
Chapter Two

A Definite Opinion

On the twentieth the fish turned a full circle and blew one large, extremely approving bubble.

Chapter Three

That One, Then

That was the name. your child wrote it on a card and taped it to the bowl, in case anybody forgot.

These three sample the opening, middle and ending of a 12-chapter book. All twelve are drawn with your child in them when the book is made: the cover and chapter one free in your preview, the remaining eleven once you order.

Is this the one?

Who the Goldfish With No Name is for

The Goldfish With No Name is a naming book with a running joke in it. Nineteen names are tried and rejected, mostly by the fish, and the twentieth is arrived at by accident. It is short, silly, and it is the one to pick for a first pet that is not going to be cuddled.

Nought to eight, and funniest between three and six when a child is old enough to enjoy a list getting out of hand. The repetition is the engine, so keep the reading level low and let the names do the work. Older children tend to start suggesting their own halfway through, which is the intended effect.

For Ariel, whose goldfish was called nine things before it settled on Kevin.
