A peek inside

How the adventure unfolds

These are just sample lines. Your book is written fresh for your child - their name woven through every page, with the words, sentence length and tone tuned to their age, and shaped by the story, interests and details you choose.

Chapter One

The Peg With My Name

The peg had your child's name on it for two whole years, and today it was coming down.

One last circuit of a room: the reading corner, the sink, the window with the paintings.
Chapter Two

One More Look Round

Your child walked round the whole room once, slowly, touching the reading corner and the paint-stained table.

Standing at the gate looking back, bag on, noticeably taller than the first-day photograph.
Chapter Three

Bigger Than Yesterday

Walking out, your child felt two things at once, and decided that was probably allowed.

These three sample the opening, middle and ending of a 12-chapter book. All twelve are drawn with your child in them when the book is made: the cover and chapter one free in your preview, the remaining eleven once you order.

Is this the one?

Who the Last Day of Little School is for

The Last Day of Little School is the sad one, and deliberately so. The peg with your child's name comes down, the room gets one last look, and the feeling at the end is not simple. It is for a child who has loved somewhere and is leaving it, and it does not rush them past that.

Two to six. It needs a child who has been somewhere long enough to mind leaving, which is usually four or five. Younger children will not feel the peg coming down. Reading level chosen at setup, and this one benefits from being read slowly with time to talk afterwards.

For Shani, who cried on the last day and asked to go back for months afterwards.

Common questions

What age is The Last Day of Little School for?

How is The Last Day of Little School personalized?

You upload one photo of your child. That photo becomes the illustrated hero - same face shape, hair and skin tone - and stays recognizable across all 12 chapters. Their name, age and a dedication are woven in too.

How long is the book, and what formats are there?

Twelve illustrated chapters, one full-page illustration per chapter. Digital is $14.90, softcover $38.90 and hardcover $42.90 plus shipping; the hardcover is a 8x8 inch matt-laminated keepsake.

Can I see it before I pay?

Yes. The cover and the whole first chapter - artwork included - are generated free. You only pay if you want the remaining eleven chapters.
