The Little Music Maker is one of the few stories that works before a child talks. It is built on rhythm rather than plot: a tap, a beat, a world that starts moving. Good for the toddler who bangs on everything, and good as a first book about trying a thing in front of other people.

Nought to six, and it is genuinely usable at one. The repetition is the point, and it survives being read four times in a row. By five the last chapter, where everybody joins in, gives a shy child a way to picture that. Reading level set at setup.
