The Note in the Pocket is about being on the receiving end. A folded note appears, nobody knows who wrote it, and four short words change the shape of the day. It is bought for a child who has been having a hard time and needs a story where the kindness arrives rather than being demanded of them.

Two to eight. Younger children want to know who wrote it and will not get an answer, which is fine. From six the last chapter, where your child writes one for somebody else, is the whole point and is worth pausing on. Reading level chosen at setup sets how plainly that is spelled out.
