The Little Train Driver is the simplest of the vehicle stories and it is built for repetition. The train leaves, crosses a bridge, arrives on time, and that is the whole plot. It is the right book for a one or two-year-old who wants the same thing to happen every night, and the wrong one for a seven-year-old.

Nought to six, and honestly nought to four. The pleasure is rhythm and sound rather than story, which is durable at two and thin at six. Set the reading level low; this one is better short. A two-year-old will ask for it again the moment it ends, which is the real test.
