A peek inside

How the adventure unfolds

These are just sample lines. Your book is written fresh for your child - their name woven through every page, with the words, sentence length and tone tuned to their age, and shaped by the story, interests and details you choose.

A square hat that does not fit, being held on with one hand during a group photograph.
Chapter One

A Very Square Hat

Your child wore the small square hat all morning and would not take it off for anything at all.

A square hat that does not fit, being held on with one hand during a group photograph.

The throw: hat already well above the frame, arms still up, everybody else looking.
Chapter Two

Up It Goes

At the end you are meant to throw it, so your child threw it higher than any hat has ever gone.

The throw: hat already well above the frame, arms still up, everybody else looking.

The catch, two-handed and lucky, with the hat visibly bent out of shape.
Chapter Three

Catching It Again

It came down slowly, turning over and over, and your child caught it and kept it forever.

The catch, two-handed and lucky, with the hat visibly bent out of shape.

These three sample the opening, middle and ending of a 12-chapter book. All twelve are drawn with your child in them when the book is made: the cover and chapter one free in your preview, the remaining eleven once you order.

Is this the one?

Who the Hat That Flew is for

The Hat That Flew is a small comic book about the end of nursery. The throwing of the cap is the whole plot, done with more force than the occasion requires, and the catching of it again is the ending. It is a keepsake more than a story and it is usually bought by a parent, for themselves as much as for the child.

Two to six, tied to an event that only happens at that age. It is short, and it is meant to be. An older sibling will find it slight, which is correct. Reading level chosen at setup, though the pictures carry most of this one and the words stay out of their way.

For Tal, who threw it over the fence and had to be lifted up to get it back.
