Is a personalized book a good gift for a child starting school?

It works best given the week before rather than on the morning, because a story read in advance is a rehearsal and a story handed over at the school gate is an object in a bag. How can a book help with first-day-of-school nerves?

When should I read it to them?

A week or two before, then again the night before. The point is repetition: by the morning itself the story is familiar, and a familiar story about a brave first day is steadier than a pep talk on the doorstep.
