The Great Beach Day is the least anxious book on the shelf. Nothing goes wrong, the crab is cheeky rather than pinching, and the sea plays tag instead of frightening anybody. It is a summer book and a good first sea book for a child who has been told the waves are dangerous.

Two to eight, best around three to six. The sandcastle chapter has enough construction detail to hold an older child for one read, but it is fundamentally a young book. Reading level chosen at setup. Read it before a first trip to the sea rather than after, when it does the most good.
