This is the dinosaur book for the child who already knows more about dinosaurs than you do. It takes the subject seriously: the giants are gentle rather than snapping, and the danger in the third act is weather, not teeth. A dependable birthday choice from five upward, and a good bet for a reader who will happily read about facts but not about feelings.
Four to eight. At four it is a story about very big animals. At seven or eight the time-travel frame starts to do its work, and the race against the storm reads as a real problem with a real solution. Vocabulary follows the reading level you choose, so the long names can be dialled up or down.
For Ari, who could say Parasaurolophus a full year before he could tie a shoelace.
