Help topic - big feelings

Personalized books to help with big feelings

For anger, worry and the feelings that arrive faster than the words for them.

The reason big feelings are hard is not that children do not understand them - it is that the feeling arrives long before the language does. A story lends them the language at a moment when nothing is being asked of them. Read on an ordinary evening rather than a hard one, a book about a child who looks like them, feeling the way they felt on Tuesday, gives them something to point at later. "Like in my book" is a genuinely useful sentence for a four-year-old to own.

What to look for

Language borrowed in advance

The words arrive on a calm evening, so they are available on a difficult one.

Distance makes it approachable

A story about a character is easier to enter than a question about themselves.

It gives you a shared reference

"Like in my book" is easier for both of you than starting from nothing mid-meltdown.

Common questions

Will a book help with tantrums?

It can help afterwards, by giving you and your child a shared way to talk about what happened. It will not stop one in progress, and any book that claims otherwise is overselling.

What age is this collection for?

Mostly two to six, which is when feelings routinely outrun vocabulary. The reading level is set during setup, so the same story works at either end.
