A folded note, an old key, and a whole family that agrees to follow it.
A personalised book for Father's Day, and the date that catches people out
If you are in Australia or New Zealand, almost every Father's Day gift guide you will read is written for a different day three months away. That is the first thing to fix, and then there is the question of who the present is really for.
Father's Day is not one date. It is the third Sunday of June across the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Germany and Singapore - and the FIRST SUNDAY OF SEPTEMBER in Australia and New Zealand. Northern-hemisphere gift guides dominate the search results in both countries, so a great many Australian parents are reading a countdown to the wrong day.
Two dates, and the one nobody writes for
Third Sunday of June: the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Singapore. First Sunday of September: Australia and New Zealand. Austria is the second Sunday of June, which catches out the people who assumed Europe was one block.
This matters more than it sounds for anything made to order. If you are in Sydney working from a British countdown, you are planning around a deadline three months late, and you will discover it in the week you needed the lead time.
The present is usually for the child as much as the father
Most Father's Day gifts from a small child are really a project the other parent organised. That is not cynicism - it is the actual shape of the day, and it changes what a good present is. The father is not being surprised by an object; he is being shown that someone thought about him with the child.
Which means the things that land are the ones with the child visibly in them. A book where the child is the character and the dedication is in their voice does that work; a nice object bought efficiently does not, however much better the object is.
What to avoid
Anything that makes him responsible for a new hobby. A gift that implies he should now take up something is a task with a bow on it.
And the joke mug tier generally. It is bought because Father's Day is a day you are supposed to buy something, and it says so out loud. If the budget is small, a small sincere thing beats a larger jokey one every year.
Count the lead time from approval, not from payment
Anything printed to order has a step people forget: someone has to approve it before it goes to the press. The delivery window starts there. Ours include production rather than transit alone - six days to the UK, nine to ten to the US, nine to fourteen to Australia - so an Australian order for the first Sunday of September wants to be approved in the middle of August, not paid for then.
The current-year dates are computed on our delivery page rather than typed here, because a wrong date on a page like this is worse than none.
Where our book fits, and where it does not
It does not fit a father who wants a thing for himself. This is a children's book with his child in it, and if the relationship you are buying for is not the one being illustrated, it is the wrong present.
It fits the version of the day that is really about the child and the father together - read at bedtime, with the dedication written by the person who cannot yet write it. The cover and the whole first chapter are free before you pay. Digital is $14.90 and the hardcover $42.90.

Common questions
When is Father's Day?
It depends where you are. The third Sunday of June in the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Singapore; the FIRST Sunday of September in Australia and New Zealand; and the second Sunday of June in Austria. Most gift guides are written for the June date and do not say so.
When is Australian Father's Day?
The first Sunday of September, not the third Sunday of June. New Zealand keeps the same date. Nearly every countdown you will find in a search result is counting to the northern-hemisphere day instead.
What is a good personalised Father's Day gift from a young child?
Something with the child visibly in it, because that is what the day is actually about. A book where the child is the character and the dedication is in their voice does more than a better-made object chosen efficiently.
How long before Father's Day should I order a printed book?
Count back from the date using the delivery window - six days to the UK, nine to ten to the US, nine to fourteen to Australia - and start that count from the day you will APPROVE the book, not the day you pay. For the first Sunday of September in Australia that means approving in mid-August.
